Description
Full day excursion by bus
Sheltered from cold winds, immersed in the rich,
always green vegetation, Opatija enjoys all the
benefits of its mild Mediterranean climate.
Built around the Benedictine abbey, mentioned for
the first time in the 12th century, Opatija starts
to write its tourist story in 1844 with the
construction of the first summer house - villa
Angiolina, surrounded by the exotic park. The
opening of transport communications, of the railway
communication with Vienna, Zagreb and Budapest in
particular (in 1873) enabled its rapid development.
The insistence of eminent physicians, dr Schroeter,
dr. Billroth, dr. Oertl and others and also all the
natural resources, prompted the Southern Railways
Association from Vienna headed by Friedrich Schüller,
to transform Opatija in one of the major tourist
resorts in Europe.
