Description
En route across east
Herzegovina, you will be introduced to the rich
history of the region.
We start with a visit to the medieval site of Blagaj,
which is located just 12km from Mostar. Its natural
water spring is one of the most prolific in Europe.
Under a large rock overhang stands the Dervish house
of Tekija dating from the 16th century, and known as
a spiritual home for Islam in the region.
On the way to Stolac we stop at an Orthodox
Monastery, Zitomislici, built in the 15th century.
Three kilometres from Stolac we find the most
significant medieval remains of upright tombstones
at Radimlja. These are the authentic monumental
tombstones from the period of the Bosnian Kingdom,
dating from 12th to 15th centuries.
In the vicinity of Stolac, there are archaeological
findings of the Palaeolithic period, in the 3rd
century BC.
Nearing Trebinje, we stop to see Vjetrenica, one of
the deepest and voluminous caves in the world,
descending to 2,100 metres. It is known for its
prehistoric species, of which the human fish is the
best known specimen.
At the end of our tour, we visit Trebinja, the main
centre for east Herzegovina. Trebinje boasts a
famous Old Town, the Araslangica bridge which dates
from the Turkish period, and many other places of
historic interest.
